Phantom’s Revenge averages only 13.3 minutes, so it is a perfect late-morning or evening ride instead of your first stop.
Rope Drop: 11 AM to 12:15 PM
- 11 AM: Exterminator first. Be at the gate before opening and walk straight there. Its 29.7-minute average is the highest in the park, and the 120-minute peak is the steepest wait Kennywood sees. It is indoors, lower capacity, and family-accessible, which means the line builds fast.
- 11:30 AM: Steel Curtain second. This is the park’s modern headliner and the second-highest average wait at 23.8 minutes. It can hit 90 minutes, and Tackling it early is the right call, both the line and operating reliability tend to be more favorable in the morning.
- 12 PM: Jack Rabbit. The 16.8-minute average is not awful, but this classic still pulls a steady crowd. Knock it out while the front half of the park is still filling in.
Mid-Morning: 12:15 PM to 1:30
After the two biggest data priorities are done, shift into Kennywood’s classic coaster loop.
- Racer averages 14.6 minutes and peaks at 60, so it is a smart follow-up before the lunch crowd spreads into the older rides.
- Thunderbolt is not in the top wait list here, but it belongs in this window if it is running well. It is a Kennywood essential and pairs naturally with Jack Rabbit and Racer.
- Phantom’s Revenge fits perfectly here. Its 13.3-minute average is lower than Exterminator, Steel Curtain, Jack Rabbit, Raging Rapids, Black Widow, Old Mill, and Racer, which tells you it usually does not need rope-drop treatment.
Lunch And Midday Break: 1:30 to 2:30
This is when I would eat, not noon. By 1:30, the top morning targets should be done, and the park is entering its busiest, hottest stretch. Sit down, hydrate, and put peak crowd time toward rides still on your list.
Good midday choices after lunch:
- Ghostwood Estate, averaging 13.0 minutes with a 45-minute peak, is a great air-conditioned reset.
- Old Mill averages 15.1 minutes and is another good low-intensity break ride.
Afternoon: 2:30 to 5:30
Use the afternoon for water rides, flats, and anything with moderate but manageable waits.
- Raging Rapids averages 16.6 minutes but peaks at 80, so ride it before the afternoon heat peaks, or return in the evening when conditions ease.
- Black Widow averages 15.2 minutes with 60-minute peaks. It is a good afternoon thrill ride if the posted wait is under 25.
Evening: 5:30 to 9:00
Dinner around 5:30 or 6:00 works well because many guests are still chasing afternoon rides. After dinner, start collecting rerides and missed classics.
- Recheck Steel Curtain if it had a bad posted wait earlier.
- Ride Phantom’s Revenge again if the line is near its 13-minute average.
- Fit in Black Widow, Old Mill, Ghostwood Estate, and Racer based on posted waits.
Final Hour: 9:00 to 10 PM
The last hour before 10 PM is Kennywood at its best. Families with younger riders can put the final hour to great use in Kiddieland; otherwise, use it for rerides and atmosphere. Use it for atmosphere and rerides.
- Phantom’s Revenge is the top night reride. The ravine run feels faster in the dark, and its average wait is low enough to justify checking twice.
- Jack Rabbit is a must after sunset, especially for the double-down.
- Racer is a great final-hour choice because it is fun, reliable, and usually easier to board late.
- Steel Curtain is worth one last look, but only if the wait is clearly under control.
